きょうの散歩のお伴は In Our Time で Chance and Design (2003-02-13) を聞いた。 進化の話だ --- 聞きごたえのある回だった。 メンバーは： Simon Conway Morris, Professor of Evolutionary Palaeobiology at Cambridge University and author of The Crucible of Creation --- the Burgess Shale and the Rise of Animals; Sandy Knapp, botanist at the Natural History Museum; John Brooke, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University.
Sandy Knapp さんが喋っているところに John Brooke さんが重ねて喋るのが気になるが、 メルヴィンが遮らないので、 たぶんそれほど無礼ではなかったのだろう。
いくつか考えたいポイントは「ディレクション」 （方向）の問題、 そして intelligent_design と creationism の問題だ。 Creationism は Intelligent design の 一種である。 （あるゲストによれば）Creationism 自身は問題にするに足りない。 学問的に問題なのは Intelligent design の方だ。 ということ。
「方向」の問題に関しては、 こないだどこかで読んだばかりだ。 ダーウィン説にとって、 ラマルク説が問題なのは、 「獲得形質の遺伝」ではなく、むしろ 「進化の潜在的な方向」の考え方なのだ、 と書いてあった。 この方向に注目して、 ドーキンスは ラマルクを「指令説」として紹介する 。 その意味で Intelligent design に結びつくわけである。
