ひさしぶりに In Our Time を聞いた。 今回のテーマは「哺乳類」 Mammals (2005-10-13)。 とっても面白かったので、絵をみたくなった。
ゲストの一人が言ってた： 「誤解しちゃいけないよ。『恐竜の時代』がおわって いまは『哺乳類の時代』などと考えてはいけない。 いまは、グールドの言うように、 『バクテリアの時代』のまっただ中なんだぜ」と。 調べたら、出典は、 Full House: The Spread of Excellence from Plato to Darwin (Gould 1996) だった。 原文は次のとおり (p. 176)：
We live now in the "Age of Bacteria." Our planet has always been in the "Age of Bacteria," ever since the first fossils --- bacteria, of course --- were entombed in rocks more than three and a half billion years ago.
On any possible, reasonable, or fair criterion, bacteria are --- and always have been --- the dominant forms of life on earth.
グールドの本を読みたくなった。 もともとぼくはグールドが大好きだったんだけど （あの野球の蘊蓄さえ止めてくれれば・・・）、 進化論の勉強の中でドーキンスに（いやいや）改宗した。 ・・・ ネオダーウィニズムの進化論の勉強もそれなりにしたので、 ドーキンスからグールドに宗旨替えしようかしようと思う。 うちにあるグールドの本をもう一度読み返そう！
